Application Process

Step 1: Submit Application Materials

A completed Application Package must be submitted to the HAESF office in Budapest by the application deadline. All applications must be complete and include the following materials written in English:  

  • HAESF Graduate Scholarship Application Form - a PC-writable template that you should save as a word document, complete and print.
  • Personal Statement (detailed instructions included on the Application Form)
  • Acceptance Letter from the receiving American institution (if available by the deadline)
  • 3 Letters of Reference (2 academic, 1 professional/experiential).

The Letter of Reference should:

  • Be written or translated into English
  • Indicate the nature of relationship with applicant
  • Program's relevance for applicant's future and career goals
  • Assessment of applicant's character, abilities, strengths, and weaknesses
  • English-language communication skills
  • Detailed contact information of the referee
  • Proof of English language proficiency (for non-native English speakers). Please submit one of the following:
  • TOEFL: (minimum score of 600 on the old paper based exam or minimum score of 250 on the new computer based exam or minimum score of 83 on the new internet based exam) OR
  • State proficiency exam of English language (advanced level) and its certified English translation. For a complete list of state recognized exams, please visit www.nyak.hu.

Please note, prior to or shortly after every application deadline, HAESF provides applicants who fulfill all other HAESF eligibility requirements but do not have a state recognized advanced language exam with the opportunity to take an institutional TOEFL exam.   • Current Curriculum Vitae
  • Entire university transcript (index) translated into English and certified by university.   (1 copy of university transcripts is sufficient)
  • A copy of your university diploma (if applicable) and its English translation
  • Copies of any other relevant certificates of completion (from technical/trade colleges, apprenticeships, etc.)
  • A letter signed by the applicant in English stating the calculated average of all the subjects studied and the average of all the subjects directly related to the major field of study

Step 2: Interviews

In order to complete the application process, all applicants who meet the minimum requirements will be invited for an interview, conducted in English, with two HAESF representatives and one member of the HAESF Advisory Board. This interview serves multiple purposes: assess the candidate's communication skills and English language ability and learn more about the candidate's professional goals and interests.

Step 3: Selection

Applications and interview assessments will be reviewed by a selection committee comprised of HAESF's Board of Advisors and HAESF officials. Applicants will be selected based on the following criteria:

  • Potential future contribution to Hungarian society
  • Matching professional objectives to the values and mission of HAESF
  • Clearly articulated professional goals
  • Well-rounded personality
  • Strength of recommendations
  • Ability to serve as an ambassador of Hungary
  • English language communication skills
  • Diversity of majors, professional interests and applicants

Step 4: Notification & Acceptance Process

Selected Fellows will be notified in writing regarding the final status of their application according to the published timeline.
